Hatha Yoga
Meditation, breathing, movement and postures lead to connection with the body and overall wellness. Courage, vigor and awareness are developed. Yoga can be learned independently, using books and videos. There are benefits to having a teacher, however, especially for beginners. Proper alignment and appropriate modifications of the postures (or asanas) will prevent injury. Often, a bias or an imbalance in the musculo-skeletal system is only accentuated if asanas are done improperly. Also, discipline can be a challenge. A teacher provides structure. To receive the benefits of this ancient art of moving, breathing and living, a home practice is encouraged.
Restorative Breathwork
Throughout history and within many cultures, the breath has been more than air moving in and out of the lungs. The English word "spirit" comes from the Latin spiritus, meaning "breath". In India, the word prana means breath. Early Hebrews believed humans were composed of two elements: basar or flesh and nefesh or breath. The breath was a spirit-like substance that dwelt in life with the flesh. Upon the death, the flesh returned to dust while the breath or spirit persisted.
Just as you learn to utilize muscles efficiently in movement, learn to use the primary and secondary muscles of respiration in the most effective way for maximum well-being. While learning the physical mechanics of a spacious, relaxed breath, receive the benefits of the meditative quality of the practice. The goal is to extend the practice into and throughout your life, for greater health on all levels.
